Hamas congratulates Iran’s new leader, urges Tehran not to hit neighbours
The Palestinian group Hamas has condemned the US-Israeli war on Iran, describing the assault as a violation of international law and urging countries across the region to work together to halt the fighting.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the movement said it “condemns the American-Zionist aggression against Iran, which violates international law, and affirms that the interest of the Islamic nation and the region lies in immediately halting this war.”
The group called for diplomatic efforts to end the conflict and urged governments across the region to cooperate in preventing further escalation.
At the same time, Hamas urged restraint from Tehran in how the war spreads beyond Iran’s borders.
The movement called on “our brothers in Iran not to target neighboring countries” and urged “all countries in the region to cooperate to stop this aggression.”
The statement came as the war launched by Israel and the United States continues to destabilise the Middle East, pushing the region closer to a broader confrontation.
Hamas congratulates Iran’s new supreme leader
In a separate message, Hamas congratulated Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Husseini Khamenei following his appointment as Iran’s new supreme leader after the killing of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in the Israeli-American assault on Tehran.
Mohammad Darwish, chairman of Hamas’s leadership council, said the movement extended its congratulations to Iran’s new leader.
“We extend the warmest and most sincere congratulations on your election as Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, succeeding the late leader Sayyid Ali Khamenei - may God have mercy on him - who was martyred in a treacherous Zionist-American aggression,” said Darwish.
Darwish said Hamas was confident the new leader would guide Iran through a critical moment for the region.
“We affirm our confidence in your wisdom and ability to steer the ship of the Revolution and the Islamic Republic during this sensitive circumstance, in preserving the course of the Islamic Revolution and achieving victory over the enemies of Islam and Muslims,” the statement added.
Backing of Palestinian cause
The movement also reaffirmed its expectation that Iran would continue backing Palestinians.
“We are reassured that you will continue to support our Palestinian people, their just cause, and their valiant resistance, in all forms of support and backing, as the Islamic Republic has always done throughout the past decades,” Darwish said.
The war between Israel and Iran began on February 28 when Israel and the United States launched a war on Iran that killed senior Iranian officials, including the country’s supreme leader.
Iran has responded with waves of missiles and drones targeting Israel and US interests across the region, widening the confrontation and raising fears of a prolonged regional war.
