US says states failed to confront Iran at NPT review

The United States said that parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) failed to reach consensus on a final document at the conclusion of the 2026 Review Conference, blaming disagreements over Iran’s nuclear activities for the outcome.

In a statement, the US Department of State said the deadlock was particularly disappointing given what it described as Iran’s continued noncompliance with safeguards obligations overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency and its ongoing nuclear activities.

Washington argued that NPT member states could not ignore alleged violations of the treaty and warned that failing to address such issues would weaken the agreement’s enforcement and accountability mechanisms.
