Director General of the Palestinian Authority’s Commission of Detainees’ Affairs in the Gaza Strip, Hassan Quneita stated that numerous Palestinian prisoners have suffered permanent disabilities during detention in Israeli prisons as a result of torture and inadequate medical care. In a press statement, Quneita said that many affected prisoners had pre-existing chronic illnesses, including diabetes, and did not receive the treatment they required while in custody. According to his account, the deterioration of medical conditions in some cases led to amputations, severe complications, or permanent disabilities. He said that cases have been documented among both former detainees who have been released and prisoners who remain in detention.
