Hamas delegation in Cairo for Gaza ceasefire talks

Hamas says a delegation has arrived in Cairo for talks with Egyptian officials and mediators on implementing the first phase of the US-brokered Gaza “ceasefire” agreement.

In a statement on Telegram, the Palestinian group said the meetings would focus on efforts to “finalise the implementation” of the first phase.

Hamas said the talks would also address ways to “halt the repeated Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and establish appropriate mechanisms for entering the second phase of the agreement”.

The “ceasefire” came into force in October last year, but Israel has continued to bomb and kill Palestinians in Gaza.

The US said in January that the agreement was moving into its second phase, centred on “demilitarisation, technocratic governance, and reconstruction”.

Hamas said Khalil al-Hayya is leading the delegation.
