Amnesty chief calls for release of Gaza hospital director Abu Safia

Agnes Callamard, secretary general of Amnesty International, has called on Israel to release Dr Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, following reports that he was transferred to solitary confinement in Nafha Prison.

In a post on X, Callamard questioned the treatment of the detained physician and criticised what she described as a lack of accountability.

“Dr Hussam Abu Safia should be with his loved ones, and caring for the many many people in need of his skills. The last place where he should be is solitary confinement,” she said, urging his release and an end to what she called Israeli “cruelty”.

Amnesty has an Urgent Action on behalf of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya. Israel must release him now. Why oh why such cruelty? Why oh why those with the power to hold Israel authorities accountable for their cruelty failing over and over?
