Iran fires missiles at Israel in retaliation for continued attacks on Lebanon
Iran fired missiles towards northern Israel on Sunday after warning that Israel must stop its attacks on Lebanon or face “more crushing and regretful blows”.
The Israeli military said it had detected missiles launched from Iran and activated air defence systems to intercept them.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards tied the attack directly to Israel’s assault on Lebanon, including strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
“We had previously warned that if the crimes in the Dahieh area of Beirut expand, we will attack targets in the occupied territories,” IRGC top joint military command said.
Iran’s military central command said Israel’s latest attack on Beirut’s southern suburbs had “crossed all red lines” and demanded a halt to its assault on Lebanon.
General Ali Abollahi, head of the Khatam al-Anbiya command, said Israel must stop attacking southern Lebanon and Beirut’s suburbs as Israeli air defences reported intercepting missile salvos.
“The Israeli army must stop its attacks on southern Lebanon and the suburbs, and if it expands its attacks to that region or responds to Iran's action, it will face more devastating and regrettable blows,” Abollahi said.
US military on 'high alert'
US President Donald Trump said Israel’s strike on Beirut had damaged efforts to reach a ceasefire deal with Iran, after Tehran fired missiles towards Israel for the first time since the April truce.
Trump told Fox News that he had expected an agreement could be signed “on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday and now this takes place”.
He said he was “not happy” about Israel’s attack on Beirut earlier on Sunday and added that the strike had not been coordinated with Washington.
Trump also said Iran’s missile fire is “certainly not going to help negotiations”, as Israel’s widening attacks on Lebanon again threaten to drag the region into a broader war.
The US president said the American military is “on alert”.
An Israeli official has said any Iranian attack on Israeli territory would trigger retaliation and could give Israel “an opportunity to renew the campaign”.
The warning came as Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked over a deal to end the war Trump launched in February with US air strikes alongside Israel against Iran.
Trump has repeatedly threatened to resume the bombing campaign unless Iran agrees to a deal soon.
“We're very close to a deal, or I'm going to blow the hell out of them,” Trump told NBC News in an interview recorded on Friday and broadcast on Sunday as he visited his New Jersey golf course.
