Trump says Nato allies to deploy minesweepers to Hormuz

After declaring the ceasefire with Iran over and threatening to "hit them hard tonight", the US president said Nato allies will send minesweepers to the critical waterway.

German foreign minister Johann Wadephul told Al Jazeera that his country is, at the lead of the UK and France, ready to engage in mine sweeping at the key waterway.

“This is a very important seaway not only for the countries in the Gulf but also for other regions in the world, so the conflict should be resolved very soon.”

Iran has repeatedly warned against foreign navies operating in the Strait of Hormuz.

On 29 June, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran alone will remove mines from Hormuz in accordance with the Islamabad MoU between Tehran and Washington.

He was reacting to French president Emmanuel Macron's remarks that  France and Oman will cooperate with their partners on clearing mines from the Strait of Hormuz.
