The UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has warned that torture in Israeli prisons has become a “central tool” in what she described as a pattern of grave violations. In a report presented to the UN Human Rights Council, Albanese said the Israeli detention system has “deteriorated… into something resembling a laboratory for cruel and deliberate practices”, adding that abuses once carried out in secrecy are now occurring more openly. She stated that the system is increasingly characterised by systematic humiliation, pain and degradation, and warned that prolonged impunity and political backing have enabled such practices to persist.
