Trump says US may reconsider role with Nato allies

US President Donald Trump criticised Nato allies, saying their lack of support during the war with Iran could prompt Washington to reconsider its commitments to the alliance.

“We would have always been there for them, but now, based on their actions, I guess we don’t have to be, do we?” Trump said at an investment forum in Miami, Florida.

Framing his remarks as a potential turning point, Trump added, “Why would we be there for them if they’re not there for us? They weren’t there for us.”

His comments come after the US and Israel attacked Iran late February, a move that drew opposition from several European Nato members who said they were not consulted before the action.
