A Hezbollah member of the Lebanese Parliament, Hussein Hajj Hassan described direct negotiations with Israel as a “major blunder” by the Lebanese government, calling for an end to what he termed a “series of pointless concessions.” Speaking to AFP from his office in parliament, Hajj Hassan said that “direct negotiations with the enemy are a major sin and a huge fall from grace for the Lebanese government,” arguing that such talks serve “no interest of the nation, the citizens, or Lebanon.” His remarks followed a meeting in Washington between Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors — the first such face-to-face talks in decades — where both sides agreed to hold direct negotiations at a later stage.
