Britain says Iran must not ‘hold world economy hostage’

British foreign secretary Yvette Cooper said the United Kingdom is increasing pressure on Iran to prevent it from “holding the world’s economy hostage” through its control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking to CNN, she stressed the global economic risks posed by disruptions to the vital shipping route, which carries a significant share of global energy supplies.

Cooper said Britain is working to support negotiations between the United States and Iran, as diplomatic efforts continue alongside rising tensions.

UK officials have repeatedly warned that prolonged disruption in the strait could drive fuel prices higher and destabilise global markets.
