The Israeli newspaper Maariv reported that concern is increasing within Israel over efforts by Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa to rebuild the Syrian military. According to the report, the Syrian leadership is working to rehabilitate the air force and develop heavy weapons capabilities, including armoured vehicles, artillery systems and missiles. Maariv said Israeli officials believe the consolidation of the new Syrian government is advancing more rapidly than expected. The report added that Israeli security officials view the developments with concern partly because of support provided by Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the Syrian authorities.
